Accessibility.
This site should work for anyone who wants to read it, including people using a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or a phone in bright sun on a job site. Where it falls short, we would rather hear about it and fix it than claim otherwise.
The standard we build to
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, level AA, as a target rather than a certified claim. No formal audit has been carried out.
What has been done
- Every interactive control is a real button or link, reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline.
- Tabs, filters and expandable rows carry the roles and states a screen reader needs, and the target rows open with Enter.
- Text meets AA contrast in both the light and dark presentations, and the site follows your system setting for which one to use.
- Text scales with the browser's font size, the layout reflows to a single column on small screens, and no page scrolls sideways.
- Images carry descriptive alternative text, and decorative marks are hidden from assistive technology.
- Motion is limited to short transitions, and animation is reduced for anyone whose system asks for that.
- On a phone the deal room's target table shows the four columns that identify a company and moves revenue, EBITDA, service mix and customer concentration into the dossier that opens when you tap a row. Nothing scrolls sideways at 360 pixels and up.
- Each point on the target map is labelled individually with the company, its location, its EBITDA, its service mix, its tier and whether it sits inside the buy box, so the map is read rather than announced as one unlabelled picture. Inside and outside the buy box are drawn as filled and hollow, not as two colors, and every figure on the map is also in the table below it.
Known limitations
- Testing has been done by keyboard and by inspecting what assistive technology is given, at screen widths from 320 pixels upward. The sample deal room has not been driven end to end with JAWS, NVDA or VoiceOver by someone who uses them daily, and until it has, this page will not claim it.
- At 320 pixels, which is narrower than most phones sold today, the target table still scrolls a little inside its own frame.
- The roll-up builder's charts are drawn rather than tabulated. Every number in them appears as text in the tiles and the coverage note beside them, but the bars themselves are a picture.
If something does not work for you
Write to barker@oldsoldier.org or call 307-690-7536 and say what you were trying to do. We answer within two business days and will send the same information in a form that works for you, including a plain document or a phone walkthrough of the deal room.
